FAQ

How do I register my dancer?

There is a registration form posted online under the tab "School" and "Classes and Calendar" You are more than welcome to print this out, fill it out, and bring it in to class. Or you can attach it in an email and send to minneapolisballetdancers@gmail.com. We are working on an online application.


What kind of payment do you take?

We only accept cash or checks made out to Minneapolis Ballet School.

Why do you expect fully enrolled student to participate in performances?

Performing is a BIG part of dancing. It helps the student grow as an artist and gives the parents a chance to see what their dancer has been working on!


What is between an apprentice and a trainee?

Apprentices: 15+

Trainees: 11+

Trainees have the opportunity to participate in performances with the company in small parts. Trainees must have been on pointe for minimum of 1 year and must be fully enrolled in the full class scheduel. 

How does my aspiring dancer become a company apprentice?

All apprentices must have been on pointe for a minimum of 3 years. Apprenticeships require the dancers to attend a much more rigorous rehearsal schedule, and give them a chance to work with the company members during company rehearsals. Apprenticeships are given by the artistic director through class audition only.


Why is there a dress code?

Safety reasons: necklaces and bracelets can come off and cause harm, stray hairs (not put up in bun) and be dangerous to eyes

Technique reasons: extra warmers can make it difficult for the instructor to see correct muscle usage and body alignment


Why do you require colored hip-alignment belts and how do I purchase them?

We require colored hip alignment belts so the instructor can easily distinguish the levels of each student. You can purchase them directly from your instructor.


How do I know what level I am in?

Each student will be evaluated by their instructor on their first day of class.


Are there separate class times for each level?

At this time MBS only holds one class for Levels 1 and up. We are confident that our small class sizes and exceptional instruction will get your dancer the proper training need for the level they are at. 


When will I be ready for pointe? 

This is individual to each dancer. Dancers 11 and older with 3 years of dance training will be assessed by their instructor as to whether they are ready to begin training in pointe shoes. Until a student has earned their pointe shoes they are encourage to take the pointe class in their flat shoes.


Why do you have a performance/registration fee?

This fee helps pay for the cost of renting the theatre and the cost of costumes that are not payed for by parents. 


Where are classes held?

Classes are held at the Cowels Center for Dance and Performing Arts.

Where do I park? 

We know that because the location is downtown Minneapolis, that this makes parking difficult. MBS has a contract with Embassy Suites valet parking across the street from the Cowles Center on Hennepin Ave.

It is $8 for four hours.  You will need to mention you are attending a class at the Cowles Center. The valet in attendance will honor this
If you choose to park elsewhere, there is metered parking both in front of the building on Hennepin, on the West side of the building on 6th street, and behind the building on North 1st Avenue. There are also paid parking lots in front of the building and behind the building as well.

May I watch class?

Observation of classes is only permitted during scheduled Parent Observation Week at the end of the school year. This is due to the fact that students can become very uncomfortable and/or distracted when parents are watching.


When are rehearsals?

Rehearsal are held during repertoire on Saturdays. Additional rehearsal with the professional company may be required and will be noted on the school calendar in advance.


How do I know if class is canceled?

In the event of inclement weather parents will receive either a text or and email. The cancellation will also be posted on Minneapolis Ballet Dancers Facebook and Twitter.


How can I volunteer or help out?
